MY STORY
My name is Lindsay Todd and welcome to Todd Tutoring. Having worked as an English teacher and examiner for 6 years I have come to appreciate the importance of confidence and self-esteem in guaranteeing academic success. I have seen exceptionally able students fail due to anxiety and less able students pass and pass well, because they believed they could. With me your child will not only improve their English skills but will leave our sessions more confident, more resilient and more successful.
My academic knowledge is of the highest standard. I hold a BA in English Literature and History (Cardiff University) and a PGCE in Secondary English with Drama (Cardiff Metropolitan University). I have spent 5 years in various state school classrooms teaching a range of abilities from Year 7 to Year 13. A year spent working with the Hospital Education Service in Bath has equipped me with the skills needed to ensure young people suffering from physical or mental health issues still access a full and successful education. My latest post was as Subject Leader of English at a post-16 music college. This allowed me to hone my planning and delivery skills to young adults who had become disillusioned with English and mainstream education. Alongside my wealth of classroom experience I am also an experienced GCSE examiner for the WJEC exam board. I have a wide experience of working with AQA, EDEXCEL and the Cambridge iGCSE as well as Functional Skills.
During my career I have been entrusted with key roles within my departments. These include PGCE English training mentor, MAT (More Able and Talented) link, KS3 Literacy Intervention Co-ordinator, assisting in creating schemes of work and responsibility for preparing the KS5 mock examinations. Being a Pastoral Tutor provided me with invaluable training in nurturing and supporting students. From providing updates to parents/carers, mentoring disengaged boys, delivering the PSHE programme, to running ‘Year 7 and 8 Exam Anxiety’ classes, I know I have the warmth, commitment and knowledge in ensuring your child makes outstanding progress in their lessons and over time.
I specialise in English Literature, English Language, Literacy skills, Functional Skills, exam preparation and proofreading/personal statement assistance.

SERVICES
ONE-ON-ONE LESSONS KS3 - KS5
Teachers need to be able to motivate and guide students to succeed. After a FREE consultation with you and the learner I will liaise with the class teacher via email to further discuss your child's needs. Then I shall put a personalised action plan together targeting the challenging areas over coming sessions.
Sessions are one hour in duration and take place at my home. Parents/carers are more than welcome to stay and work/read etc whilst we work. Tea and biscuits are provided! The learner shall be issued with their own folder where they can store their work and take away if they wish to continue it at home.
I can identify students’ problem areas and work with them in positive, constructive ways to achieve success. I design my lessons according to my students’ needs, with an emphasis on confidence-boosting activities.
Sessions are £30 or £110 for four. Please note that full payment must be made before the session and is non-refundable. However if there are extenuating circumstances I am willing to discuss re-arranging sessions.
GCSE EXAM PRACTICE
After taking numerous learners through GCSEs I have concluded that the key to exam success is personalised attention, patience, hard work and a lot of practice. I will liaise with the learner's KS4 teacher and ascertain where the challenging areas are in terms of exam papers. I will then use my wealth of examiner's experience to teach exam reading skills, methods for approaching essays and timed practice in a way which instills confidence rather than fear of the exam. Each paper will be marked and handed back at the next session.

A LEVEL EXAM PREPARATION
Like many A Level subjects, English Language and English Literature A Level are nothing like their GCSE counterparts. They are challenging at times and requires a knowledge of terminology. Analysis is a major part of the course and you will encounter countless texts of different genres and subjects – and not only written data either.
Using past papers we will consolidate the knowledge gained in the classroom. I shall show the learner how to translate it into top-grade exam answers. Through timed practice the learner will gain valuable tips and methods which will allow them to approach their exam with confidence.

PROOFREADING/PERSONAL STATEMENT ASSISTANCE
'Your words are the bricks and mortar of the dreams you want to realise. Your words are the greatest power you have.' (Sonia Croquette)
One of my favourite quotes and very true! Yet sometimes we find ourselves missing out on opportunities such as that exciting new job or much desired University place simply because our application forms contain faults. Common examples include spelling and grammatical errors, incorrect synonyms such as 'your' and 'you're', or simply language choices that are not appropriate and do not match the person specification.
I will liaise with you purely via email for optimal ease. Having years of experience of marking and critiquing classwork, GCSE and A level coursework and exams I am confident I can assist you in perfecting that letter of application or personal statement.
Contact is through email only. Once payment is received I will ask for a copy of your draft document. Once received I shall email an action plan within 48 hours.
£20 per document. This covers three emails where discussions regarding the document will take place.
Please note that full payment must be made before work on the document will begin and is non-refundable.
“LINDSAY WAS A MUCH VALUED, COMMITTED, DEDICATED AND LIKED MEMBER OF THE DEPARTMENT WHO WAS HIGHLY PRIZED.
THE STUDENTS WERE ALWAYS CENTRAL IN EVERYTHING SHE DID. BOTH AT KEY STAGES 3 AND 4, THEIR PROGRESS WAS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE TO HER.
HER LESSONS WERE ALWAYS THOROUGHLY PREPARED, CHALLENGING AND HER DIFFERENTIATED RESOURCES WERE EXCELLENT. SHE HAD AN EXCELLENT RAPPORT WITH OUR PUPILS.
LINDSAY WAS HIGHLY ORGANISED. DEADLINES WERE ALWAYS MET AND WORK WAS COMPLETED TO A HIGH STANDARD.
I HAVE NO HESITATION AT ALL IN RECOMMENDING LINDSAY TO YOU. SHE IS THOROUGHLY COMMITTED TO HER STUDENTS AND SHE, WITHOUT FAIL, GIVES HER BEST."
Work Reference - 2014
“I have always found Lindsay to be conscientious and professional in her approach to the students in our care. Lindsay is honest and reliable, always wanting the best for her students. She works with a range of students and has been particularly successful in building positive relationships with the more vulnerable students. Students themselves often speak of the culture of success she fosters and how she has given them a sense of belief in their own abilities. Without hesitation I would recommend Lindsay to you.”
